ST. ALBANS.
The declaration of the result of the Sfc. Albans election did not excite much interest, only about a dozen persons, including the successful candidate, being present. Mr Jebson did not appear. The Beturning Officer (Mr E. P. Holdernesa) announced the state of the poll to be ■■— F.J. Garrick 396 J. Jebson 79 Thornhill Cooper 2 Informal votes, 9; and declared Mr Francis James Garrick duly elected, at which there was some applause, Mr Gabsick thanked those present, both personally, and as representing the whole electorate, for the confidence they had reposed in him, both personally and as a member competent to represent them in what would probably be the most important Parliament in the history of New Zealand. He hoped - they would not expect from him more than he would be able to do, but he would faithfully carry out the promises he had made. Be would be a drag on hurtful legislation, but would do all in his power to remove the present depression; and he thought a large proportion of those now elected were prepared to sink selfishness for the same ends. He thanked them individually for the kind feeling shown him during the contest. He was almost a recluse, and had not been much among them, and his reception had been far above his expectations. Nothing should induce him to do anything to which his supporters would object, and he hoped to be assured of their continued confidence when he should address them on his return from Wellington. Mr Garrick then reiterated the assurance of his attachment to the interests of the working men, and concluded by moving a vote of thanks to the Returning Officer, which was carried unanimously.
