Mr Barton Ireland, a member of the great firm of tanners, Ireland Brothersj-svas seized with a fit of coughing at one o'clock this morning, broke a blood vessel, and died an hour later. It is stated that Dγ Philson, coroner, intends to hold a post mortem on the body of Barton Ireland, to ascertain the cause of death. It is believed that death was caused by over excitement and over exertion with respect to the elections. WANGANUI, July 23. When the poll was declared last night the hustings broke down. Sir Ballance was just about to speak, when all on the hustings were precepitated ten feet. No cine was hurt except a boy, who got hie arm hurt. There was great excitement over the result, but no ill-feeling was shown. ;.. WELLINGTON, July 23. 'The New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Tongariro left Plymouth for Port Chalmers on the sth inst. Oae of the rowdies who assaulted the police at the Te Aro election last night was fined £5. Several other cases were adjourned. At the Divorce Court to-day a decree absolute was granted in the case of Harris v Harris. A man named Gardner, residing at Kaitoke, had a narrow escape from being killed yesterday evening. After registering his vote he imbibed rather freely, and proceeded along the railway line. After going a short distance he sat down on the rails and went asleep. On the evening train approaching the engine driver noticed the object in front and slackened speed. The cowcatcher caught the man, and inflicted a nasty scalp wound. Gardner is now rocovering. It is stated that Dr. Chilton, of Christchurch, will succeed Dr. Keyworth as resident surgeon of Wellington Hospital. DUNEBIN, July 23.
