The above Oounoilmet on Monday night. Present—Crs. Maodonald (in the chair), M'Olatohie, Wood, β-robb, Weyburn, , Beed, Hawkdne, Smith, Maephenon. The receipt* sinoe the former meeting were £300 6b 9d. A communication was read from the Colonial Secretary's Office, drawing attention to the high price the borough charged H.IL ships for water, and suggesting that it be reduced. The letter quoted that : at Wellington the price was 2s 6d per ton, and at Auckland but Iβ. The Colonial Secretary wrote under information .from Commodore Wilson. Or. Hawkins thought that any reasonable ponces - cession which would have a tendency to attract H.M. ships to this port should be favorably considered. It was resolved that H.M. ships be supplied with water at Iβ 6d per ton. The, General Manager of Bailways acknowledged the receipt of the Council's letter, stating that the borough would be.prepared to take over the wharf water supply duties in two months. The letter was left with the water supply committee. Two residents at the- Heathcote Valley wrote, asking permission to be supplied with water from the Council's mains. It was left with the water ■ supply committee. Messrs Yin cent and Co., owners of the Crown Hotel, called the attention of the Council to the drainage overflowing upon their premises from the adjacent cottages. The foreman of works reported upon this matter that he had had occasion to -speak to the tenants of the hotel of the dirty state of the hotel yard. The drainage complained of had been attended to within the past few days. Mr H. N. Raider requested the Council to have some metal laid upon the newly made road near bis property on the Sumner road, and that two or three feet be taken off the crown of the hill as a convenience for carts passing along the road. The letter was left with the works committee to carry out. Mr Thomas Macintosh reported that he had had a difficulty in getting the night soil removed - from his premises and had, in consequence, put in a cesspit at some expense, which he had been told he must now close up. He asked permission to retain the cesspit. It was agreed that Mr Macintosh muet comply with the requirements of the Act, the Council having no other course open to them. Mr H. K. Balder suggested by letter that the printing office lately occupied by W. Eiley be taken over by the Council at a price te be agreed upon. A resolution was agreed to to the effect that the Council could not entertain the proposal, but requests that the rent due to the borongh be paid. The foreman of works reported that he could not find the datum stone which he was requested to look for. It was resolved that the surveyor be written to requesting him to come and place the stone in position at the intersection of Uorwich Quay and Dublin street. Or. Grubb spoke of the filthy state of the culvert near his premises. S6me one was in the habit of emptying night soil there. The inspector of nuisances was instructed to attend to it. Or. Smith called the attention of the foreman of works to the bad odours prevailing at the corner of Canterbury and Winchester streets. Several councillors spoke of the offensiveness arising from nuisances committed publicly by persons outside certain public houses. Cγ. Wood asked the eatatee committee whether they were aware that the Government had encroached upon the road on St. David'e street; in making their improvements recently nearly half the road had been taken. The report of the engineer at the pumping station was read, and it was resolved—" That Mr Croll, the inspector of machinery, be written to pursuant to a request made therein." Accounts amounting to £153 Is Id were passed for payment.
