An apology wae re. oeived for the non-attendance of Or. Thorn* tlm>ugk indupoaitioiu Copies of letters sent by Town Clerk since last meeting were read and approved. The following correspondence was read, viz.:— From EL O. LaUer, Deputy Commissionex of Land Tax, asking for permission to leave the Land Tax rate roll at the Town Clerk's office. From the Secretary of the Jforth Canterbury Jockey Club asking the Mayor to proclaim a half-holiday on Thursday, 17th April, which the Mayor stated he had done. From Messrs-Buseh end Tattoo, asking permission to place a crowing over the ride channel opposite their yards in Market street. Cr. Bohinson moved that the request be granted, subject to the satisfaction of Cr. Boyd and the Town Clerk. The re. port of Profeuor Bickerton on'the samples of water from the wells in town submitted to him for analysis was then read, stating that he had examined the five samples submitted from Bangiora and found them nearly all the same. He drew the following inference from the analyses:—" The analyses point to water possessing a high degree of purity, very similar to the water of the Waimakariri from which it is proposed to supply the City of Christcburch. There ie almost a total absence of the results o£ organic contamination, the quantity of mineral matter is also very low, inno case more than five grains per gallon, henoe no objection can be urged against their ose for domestic purposes. (Signed.) A. W. Bickbbtow, P.S.S., &3., Colonial Analyst. Canterbury College laboratory, April 18th, 1879."- Burfc hoped that the reporters .present would take notice of Professor Bickerton's report and tell the people of the province; and New Zealand generally, that the water of Bangiora is remarkably pure, and not so im- j pure as was stated a short time ego. Cr. Cone was also glad to hear that the water was proved to be thoroughly pure, and hoped the Council would carry out their resolution to prevent its being polluted. Cr. Burt thought thai the business of the Council would be conducted much more expeditiously if a works and sanitary committees were appointed, and so relieve the Council of a good deal of the business which at present occupies naach of its time. Or. Cone would support a motion for the appointment of euoh committees, as there was plenty of work for them to do. Or. Burt then gave notice of motion that he would move a resolution to that effect at next meeting. From Mr C. Ff. Pemberton, askingfor a further payment on account of the borough map. It was decided to pay £30 on account. The poundkeeper's quarterly return was laid before the Council. The town olerk laid on the table the half-yearly balance sheet for the past six months. A circular from the Postmaster-General giving an itinerary of his Excellency's vieifc to the South Island. Or. Burt moved that an invitation be sent to his Excellency Sir Hercules Bobinson, asking: him to visit- Bangiora during bis stay in Canterbury. The Mayor suggested that he be asked to spend an boor or two in Bangiora, and show him as much of the district as possible. Or. White Or. Bart's motion, which was carried. The surveyor's report was then read and considered. It stated that a tender had been accepted for the formation of a footpath on the east side of the Drain road, jiz., that of Mr W. Sloan at £1 4§ 6d per chain; and Mr Stephens' at £9 18e 6d, for driving two pipes for fire extinction purposes; that the lease of the Borough Beserve had been given np by Mr Boyle, and that the reserve had been let to Mc J. C. Boyle; that the inhabitants of High street, from the Junction Hotel to the oornor of High street and Ashley road, have not as yet agreed to pay their share of the expense of concrete kerbing and asphalting the footpaths. Or. Boyd moved that the work be tendered for as soon as the inhabitants signed an agreement to pay their, share of the expense. Cr. Bobinson . pointed ont that the footpath by his house was mnch in need of a little gravel before the winter sets in. It was resolved to hare a screen made, and that the footpath be gravelled as far as it is formed. The clerk reported that the credit balance at the Bank was £1052 19s 10d. Accounts amounting to £88 17b 6d were passed for payment, including the pay-sheet for past fortnight, £19 4s. The Mayor, in moving the motion standing in his name, said that he would like very much to know how far they would have to go up the Ashley river to obtain a fall of 80 or 90 feet, which would be sufficient to form a water snpply, and with force to throw a jet of water 40 feet high, and answer every purpose of a water supply for Bangiora. He wished also to have the supply of water at the Ashley bed tested by sinking a well and pumping out the water that flows into it. Cr. White seconded the motion. Crs. Burb and Oone agreed with the motion, and would like to see the supply tested, and to know how far up the river the required head could be got. Or. Good obtained permission to postpone bis motion respecting the erection of lamps in the borough, of which notice had been given, until next meeting, for further information on the subject. The Mayor stated that he had received a sum of £50 towards the purchase or improvement of a public cemetery for Bangiora. Or. Burt moved that the Mayor enquire the price of a section of land near the Ashley, belonging to Mr Andrews, with the view of purchasing the same for a public cemetery. Or. Bobinson seconded, and it was carried. Cr. Oone gave notice that he would move—" That the Council purohaso a small section for a gravel pit." The Council then adjourned.
