Sathbdav, Mabch 29. £Before G. I. Mellish, Esq., RM_ OBSTStrcriBG run Fozxcs.— W. Collins, arrested on Thursday aftei-toon last for obstructing the police while they were taking a prisoner to gaol along Oxford street, was brought up. The defendant stated that he came to Lyttelton by the Botorua the day of his arrest, and was at the railway station with a friend waiting to leave for Christchurch. His friend was given in charge by the stationmaster, Mr Bradley, for creating a disturbance. The police in taking him to gaol used him so roughly that he (defendant) remonstiated, and told them they had no right to screw aad twist his leg. Defendant denied tbe charge of obstructing them. On the contrai/, he advised his friend to go to gaol quietly. A number of witnesses were called by Sergeant-Major O'Giady to prove that the defendant behaved very threateningly and. abusively to the police in demeanour and language. Accused defended himself, being apparently familiar with the method of examining witnesses, and called two or three persons in his behalf. The Bench was of the opinion that defendant had used the language as alleged by the police, but thought that be had advised his friend to go quietly with the officers, which, with the circumstances of his having been detained since Thursday, would be taken into co_«lderalij_, and the case dis* mined. I A___.Tn.Tnro a r Sttperios Offices- — Augustus Sylvester, one of tbe colored seamen on board the barque Buttermere, was charged with striking the second mate of tha vessel, Mr W. H. Sawyer. Mr Joyce appeared for the prosecution, and Mr Nalder for the prisoner. Captain Ogilvie produced the official log, showing the entry of the offence. Being sworn, ho said: Sylvester came aft to the poop where witness and his wife were sitting last Thursday, and placed a tin dish before him cont-iinirig some boiled lice, stating that it was not fit to eat. Witness Jtold mm to take it away and go for "ard. As he did not do so, witness kicked the dish from in front of him and it fell to the deck. Prisoner 1 suddenly picked it np, and was in the act of throwing it at witness, when the second officer caught hold of it and prevented him. Prisoner then struck the officer with his fist in the face. Mrs Harriet Ogilvie, also the second officer, the steward, and an apprentice gave corroborative evidence. Tho sa-maker and a colored seaman named Brown, wero examined in defence. It was stated by the steward that he had salt 3d the rice given to the prisoner, and his Worship, in passing sentence, aaid that he considered the ca.e resulted from the meddlesome mischief of the steward. He did not overlook the conduct of the prisoner in striking his superior officer, and were it not for the manner in which it appeared the steward had behaved he would sentence the prisoner t) two months' with hard labor. He would, however, give him but seven days. Btbat Oatter. — WHBam Mitchell (two charges), T. Wakelin, and W. Harkess, vere fined, the first 10s, and the two last named 5s each, for allowing their cattle to roam at large, Crra. CASBS.—Curtis v Bowdsley, claim £3 2s ; defendant given a week's 'time to settle.
