COURTENAY.
The annual general meeting of ratepayers in this district waa held ou January 2nd, at 1 p.m., the chairman of the Board in the chair. The Chairman laid on the table a balanceaheet for the inspection of the ratepayers present. The surveyor then read a detailed account of tbe receipts and expenditure incurred during the past year. The receipts were—From Government grants and sub-1 sidies, £6837 9s Id; interest, £1612 8s 9d; rates, £81 15s lOd; rente, £52 ss; other eources, £58 9s 6dj with a balance of £26,061 Is lOd from 1877; making a total of £34.703 10s. The expenditure, amounting •to £11,030 9s 9d, together with liabilities amounting to £1975 5s 4d for works authorised and at present in .progress,' leaves a j balance in favour of the Board of £21,697 14s lid. The account showed 90i miles of new roads to have been formed and 29 _ miles metalled during the past year. The Chair- i man explained to the ratepayers that the ex- j penditure, after deducting official expenses, had as usual been evenly distributed over the three different portions of the district, as shown in the detailed report placed before them. The following resolutions were proposed and carried unanimously: —"That the report and balance-sheet be adopted." "That tho thanks of the meeting be givoa to the Board for the manner in whicb their duties had been executed during the past year." Several questions were then asked, and, having been replied to by the Chairman and members, the Chairman called upon the meeting to elect three members in the room of Messrs Mathias, Gough, and Adams, who retired by rotation, but were eligible for reelection, when Mr Hopkins proposed and Mr Revely seconded Mr Mathias. Mr Sanderson proposed and Mr Paterson seconded Mr Gongh. Mr McClelland proposed and Mr Hopkins seconded Mr Anson. No one else being nominated for the existing vacancies, the Chairman declared the above-named duly elected, and after a vote of thanks to the Chairman the meeting adjourned. At a meeting of the Board, held immediately afterwards, the Hon. Colonel Brett was unanimously elected Chairman of the Board for the ensuing year, and the Board adjourned. The rage for exhibitions, has now spread even to Central Asia. The latest news from "Tashkend states that an agricultural and indu atrial exhibition is about to be held there. Great preparations are being made for it at Sannacand, and the Government have promised gold and silver medals to the exhibitors as well as—honorary caftans.
