AKAROA AND WAINUI.

This Road Board met in its new office, Head of the Bay, for the firat time, the members present being Messrs Shadbolt, McDonald, Currey, and Williams. In the absence of the chairman, Mr Duxbury, Mr F. W. Williams was enllcd to the chair. A deputation, consisting of Messrs Brown, Segar, and Kingston, Robinson's Bay, waited upon the B>ard in reference to a road to open np their bueh sections. After some d'scus eion on the subject, it appeared that the deputation were not unanimous in their wishes, Mr Brown objecting to lh« road passing through hie land. The chairman suggested that the deputation should withdraw and arrange the matter before coming to the Board with any proposal. Mr Martindale met the Board in regard to the Okain'e Bay road coming through hie property to join the main road, and offered to take land for land, and in consideration that a larger piece of land would be thrown into hie property than that takon T>y the Boiid would do the fencing, with the exception of five chairs, which he would erect at 25s per chain, the Board paying all cos's of conveyance. The Board agreed to accept Mr Martindale's terms. A letter was received from the Colonial Secretary intimating that, in terms of the Board's request, that The Regulation of Local Elections Act, 1876, would apply to all elective officers in the district. A copy of the New Zealand " G-azette," of date 6th August inst., containing the Governor's proclamation of game wa« also enclosed. (Kenny) final certificate for the Long Bay road, and elso forwarding specificatione of Mount Bossu road, and also plans and specifications of upper part of Okain'e Baj road. A letter was received from the Board's solicitor, Mr Nalder, stating that the reason Mr E. Lelievre's conveyance was not completed, was that he had not been furnished with the plan and description of the lund. The clerk was instructed to see that, this was supplied at once. A letter was received from the Chairman of the County Council, informing the Board that the Council had fired the 29th insfc. as the day on which the Council would hear the question between the Board and the Li'tie River Board relative to the dispute as to where the main Christchurch road joined their respective districts. The Chairman and Mr Williams we-e requested to represent the Board on the occasion. A letter was received from Mr Litter in answer to a request for the amount of hip claim for road diversion by the Jate Provincial Council, refusing to submit his claim to the Government, and threatening th*t if the Board did not settle it in a reasonable time he will stop the road. Letters were received from Mr A. C. Knight and Mr H. Piper, also in reply to queries a« to Provincial claims Both theee gentlemen replied that they were willing to take old and useless roads in their properties in lieu of the land taken for the new one. The consideration of these letters were left over till the next meeting of the Board. Mr Le Clerc requested that a culvert ehould be put across the road in Barry's Bay, opposite hia property, and offering to see that it was always kept open. The Board instructed the work to be done on the terms offered. Messrs E. Harrington and Co., Koloski, wrote, enquiring what was the exact line of road in German Bay Valley, and also asking the Board to complete the road to their respective homesteads. The clerk was instructed to visit and report on the question raised. Mr R. Dawber wrote complaining of the bad state of tbe roads and culverts up the road from the German Buy beach to the Main road. The clerk was directed to employ J. Hammond, and have the matter put right at once. Mr A. Hawthorn wrote, requesting, assistance to make a road from the Muku road to his house. The Board replied that they could not make roads on private property. Mr T. Brooks, as chairman of theDevauchelle's Biy Cemetery Committee, interviewed the Board in reference to the laid required for road diversion through the committee's recent purchase, and offered to take £100 as a lump sum for the road and land severed, 1 acre 32 perches, the Board paving all costs of fencing and conveying. The Board agreed to accept Mr Brooks' offer. It was resolved that the County Council be again written to, requesting them to place the £1549 14s special grant for Mount Bossu road to the credit of the Board, ac originally directed by the Minister of Public Works. Letters concurring with the suggestion of the Board re endowment!, were received from Hawke's Bav,Wßikousiti, and Wairauku Road Boards. A letter was to hand from Mr Nalder, solicitor, conveying deeds for the following properties, viz.:—Mr J. O. Waeckerle'e corner and land for roads diversion ; from M. Morgan, L. Levalli*nt, and F. Moore, and adding that the balance of the deeds were being registered. The Board reeolved that it be an instruction to the engineer that in all case* of laying-off roads the fencing pegs beput in at the same time as the centre pegs. The engineer was further instructed to re-surrey the line of road through the Native reserve, and also through Mr Knight's land, for the purpose of conveyance and fencing. The tenders of Mr W; Wright for clearing the line of road at French Farm to Wainui Pass at 15s per chain was accepted, and that of "MV p. Shadbolt for repairing and forming the upper part of the Okam's Bay road at £2 15s per chain were accepted. Accounts to the amounts of £98 7s were passed for payment, and the Board then adjourned fill Saturday, 31st August, at 2 p.m.
