KOWAI.

A epecial meeting of this Board was held at the office, Balcairn, on Saturday, 17th instant. Preeent— jMfesws Ensor (chairman), Williams, ColemaD, Mathiaa, and A deputation consisting of Messrs J- Macfariane, Vaughan, Thompson, "Wyllie, and Peach attended with a view to getting help from the Kowai Foad Board in taking eteps to keep the River Ashley from further encroachments. Mr Macfarlaie opened the proceedings by etating their object in waiting upon the Board, after which Mr Vaughan produced a list of fifty-nine persons whose property was liable to he effected in case of senoue overflow of the Ashley, stating that all those persons with three or four exceptions were willing to have a special rate of 9d in the £ levied upon their property. The deputation wished to know if the Board would supplement the amount accrued from the rate by giving £1 for every £1 collected, and undertake the inpervision of the works that might be decided upon- The Board requested a little time to consider their reply, and toe deputation withdrew. On re-entering the chairman submitted the following resolution for the consideration of the deputation— *' That the Board are willing to grant £1 for «yery £1 railed by the parties interested up to ia.oo. The work is to be carried out by the committee of subscribers, and vouchers for expenditure are to be submitted to the Board. The Board will not undertake any liability in the matter." The deputation declined to give an immediate reply, but would take time to consider, and thanking the Board withdrew. The proceedings then terminated.
