BOROUGH COUNCIL.
LYTTELTON. Monday, Mabch 9. The Council held its usual weekly meeting, Present—His Worship the Mayor, Ore Buiet, Hawkins, Graham, Grange, Young, and Allwrighfc. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The Clerk stated that he, had received during the week £17 lie. The aooounta passed for payment amounted to £29 17s Id. The following letters were read :— From the Secretary for Public Works, stating that the prison gang would, after levelling the Borough school playground site, be employed on the works required in Salt'e gully. From Mr Warner, agent for Mr Hill, neking the Council to form and cover in a brick drain, in front of sections 205 and 206. The matter was referred to the works committee. From Mr J. Fisher, asking for a porter'a luggage license. After some discussion it was considered that no steps could be taken at present by the Council. .
Cr Hawkins called attention to the groat difficulty in obtaining powder for blaeting purposes, except in email quantities. As a contractor for the breakwater, he had applied to the Collector pf Customs, who had advised him to see tho Superintendent anfl Executive. This be ha 4 done, and the advice was to excavate a magazine between Sandy Bay and Sticking Point. If tho Council would agree to it, a proper excavation would be made in Sandy Bay, where no s'rangers would be admitted, and tho town and inhabitants would run no risk. Cr Graham moved, Cγ Young seconded, and it was carried—" That this Council will be satisfied with any arrangements that might be made with tfie Secretary for publjp Works." Respecting an application from Mr Edgar, it was resolved th.afc a, laborer be nut pp tho, work for three days. The Council then adjourned.
