The annual ratepayers' meeting took place on January 2nd, at White's Accommodation House, Courtenay.

: The proceedings of the Board during the past year must have satisfied the ratepayers for there were not more than , a dozen present, and the attendance of these seemed to be .the-result.'Of each one having a slight grievance that required putting to rights. These having been discussed and settled; the chairman, Hon Colonel Brett, read a report of, the Board's proceedings during the past year, and laid a balance sheet on the table, the receipts being as follows :—Balance in hand from 1872, £152 16s 4d ; General Government grant, £4QQ ; Provincial do, £2514 5s 8d ; rates, £238 13s ; sale of maps, £1 5s ; total, £3309. Expenditure—On main roads such as West Coast, 'Halkett,. Bealey, Station road, Greendale, £1574 4s 2d ; by roads, £309 ; cuttings, £81 8s 6d ; culverts, £40 2s 8d ; day work, £103 5s ,• pound, £22 15s Bd. These were tbe principal items, there being contracts unfinished amounting to about £430.

The chairman then informed meeting that Messrs Brett and White retired by lot, both of whom were eligible for re-election. These were then re-elected, and the meeting .
