Sib, —In these days of improved and economical administration I cannot pass the following figures, taken from last year's estimates, and the results which are shown : Salary to Colonel Commanding perannum £300 0 0 Travelling allowance per annum 50 0 0 Salary to two staff sergeants, each £109 per annum 21S 0 0 Travelling allowance, £50 each per annum 100 0 0 Bugler 45 0 0 Cavalry instructor 30 0 0 Office expenses, stationery, incidentals, &c. a very low estimate 100 0 0 General Government total expenses of staff £843 0 0 Number of efficient volunteers in the province estimated about 300 men. This number divided into the above amount gives an average of about £2 16s a man per annum for instruction alone. The capitation grant is £2 (more or less) a year. ' The province has voted £150 for the instruction encampment, which sums increase the average to about £5 6d per man, and the total expenditure to, say £1593. Yours, &c, Nemo.
