GOVERNMENT EMPLOYES.
TO THE EDITOK OP THE PRES3,
Sir, —I should like to ask through your columns whether Government servants—l mean those who are supposed to be paid a sufficient remuneration for their whole time —are allowed to take private work ? aud to carry on their professional business, to the detriment of those who have to work hard for their living, and have not got a good billet to fall back on. If this is allowed, and I must presume it is as I find it is done, I think you will agree with mc that it should at once be put a stop to. It is not fair, for, independently of their being already paid for their services, the position they are placed in not only gives them opportunities of seeking work—aye and of even touting for it—but it enables them to do it at a lower sum, and thus undercut those who are dependant solely on their business or profession. Ido not write on a supposed grievance, but one I know to exist. Yours, Sec, April 15th, 1873, ' N.
