HEATHCOTE.

The Board met at the office, Ferry road, on Thursday last. Present —The chairman, and Messrs Ness, Attwood, and Danlop. The minutes of the previous ordinary and special meetings having been confirmed, Mr Dunlop reported on the side channel at the Hillsborough and Opawa school, when it was agreed to clear the channel and place pipes at the entrance to the master's house. Mr Attwood reported that an arrangement had been made with Mr M'Namara to put earth on Ollivier's road on one side of the city drain, and on the road leading to the canal reserve on the other, at the rate of ten yards to the chain at 6d per yard. Mr Attwood also reported that Mr Brittan was having his hedge, which was three feet on Buckley's road, removed. The following correspondence was read:— From the chairman of the Board of Health, with copy of the Act. The clerk was instructed to acknowledge the receipt of the same. From Messrs Milburn and Radcliffe, offering to form and repair Dyer's road, as had been pointed out to them, and to do it to the satisfaction of the Board, for the sum of £25. The Board agreed to accept the offer. From Thomas Mairs, asking for.an extension of time for carting gravel on Ferry road ; also, for an advance of £20 on account. Granted. From the Provincial Treasurer, informing the Board that £225 of the Provincial grant, and £80 of the General Government grant had been paid into the Bank. From Mr F. C. Hall, asking the Board to to provide drainage for the Colombo road school ground. It was agreed that if the school committee find pipes to carry the water to the drain on the south side of Going's road, the Board would put them in. From Messrs Whittington, asking for an advance on account of the metal they are breaking for Ferry road. —£10 was granted. From Mr James Moore, desiring that a deputation should be appointed to inspect his pigetye, &c, which had been complained of by Mr Lane as being very offensive.

The chairman, Messrs Rees and Attwood were appointed to inspect Mr Moore's pigstye ; also. Jackson's creek, and a culvert in Aid win's road, which, instead of being put into the new city drain, had been put across the toad, simply taking the water from one side of the road to the other, thus completely flooding the road ; and the night-soil reserve, which, according to the report of the inspector of nuisance for the city, was said to be perfectly free from even the appearance of anything offensive. From Mr L. Coates, asking that a part of Jackson's creek, near Opawa, might be cleared. Mr Dnnlop was requested to report at next meeting. From Mr Banks, with reference to the complaints of the nuisance in Jackson's creek. It was resolved fhat as Mr Banks' reply was not likely to settle the question, his attention be again called to the Board's letter of the Ist instant, and informed that unless the request contained therein be complied with within fourteen days the Board will cause the obstructions to be removed. From the- same, offering to give some gravel to the Board. Mr Dunlop was requested to wait upon Mr Banks. From the Secretary for Public Works, declining to give any assistance to the Heathcote and Spreydon Eoad Boards in keeping in repair that part of Colombo road between the railway and the belt, which is so much cut up by city traffic, and from which nothing can be obtained towards maintaining the piece of road in question. From the same, still refusing to repair their culvert on the Hills road. From the same, authorising the Board to sue for arrears of tolls on the Swing Bridge in the name of the Superintendent. The Clerk was instructed to attend to this matter. In consequence of the great injury done to side channels and ditches in the district, by cattle and horses being allowed to wander at large, it was resolved to ask the assistance of the Commissioner of Police in suppressing the nuisance. The special rate of one shilling in the £ on that portion of the district affected bythe Heathcote and Spreydon drainage scheme, was ordered to be made. * Mr Gimblet offered to find a man to assist the Board's man in deepening the drain on Hargood's road. Mr Gimblet's offer was accepted, with thanks. Instructions were given that tenders were to be invited for carting metal on Bridle path road, and shingle on Avon river road. The Clerk reported that since last meeting the following amounts had been placed to the Board's credit in the bank—Subscription to Mardon's road, 10s ; one month's rent of swing bridge, £17 Is 8d ; arrears of tolls on do, 18s 6d; rates, 209 Is 2d ; Provincial Government grant, £225 ; General Government grant, £80 ; total, £532 11s 4d. Pay-sheets and accounts, amounting to £151 7s 6d, were passed for payment. The balance to the credit of the Board is £180 0s Id. The Board then adjourned to Thursday, the 24th instant.
