0 THE ENCAMPMENT.

Tuesday, April 15. The camp's movements during yesterday were exceedingly few, being confined to private parades, the remainder of the day being devoted to the sports on the beach, which took place as follows, Golonel Packe acting as judge :— Cavalby Race, one mile. Seven entries. Prizes, £2 and £1. Trooper Stewart , 1 Sergeant- Major McGuinness 2 Trooper Andrews 3 A splendid race between the first two horses ; won by a head. Lumber Eace, 150 yards. Four men to each timber waggon. Prizes, £1 10s and 15s. Wellington Artillery 1 Lyttelton do 2 Christchurch do 3 The Wellington men got by far the best place, being nearest to the sea, and consequently on hard ground ; Christchurch having the worst place through being in loose sand. Lyttelton was the first to get away, but was overhauled by Wellington after a few yards had been gone, the latter winning by ten yards ; Christchurch a bad third. High Jump. Prizes, 15s and sa. During the day the Artillery fired a match with the following results, all the shots being fired out of the Christchurch Armstrong:— Chbjstchubch Artillery. No. 1 shot—s yards to right, elevation low No. 2 shell—s yards to right No. 3 shell —5 yards to right. Wellington. No. 1 shot—s yards to left, low No. 2 shell —5 yards to left, low No. 3 shell—high. No. 2 shell 2 „ No. 3 shell 2 „ Shortly after five o'clock the corps assembled in camp were ready for tbe march home, the tents and other camp equipage being packed upon the baggage waggons, and a start for town was made about 6 p.m., the men reaching, town about 8 o'clock,

The Rifle Association meeting was continued during the day, but owing to their only being two targets, the events on fhe programme were got off but slowly, the only two finished yesterday being the Association Cup and Mr Blake's cnp. The former was won by Corpl. Chapman, No 2 Engineers, and the latter by Sergeant Dixon, No 2 Engineers, so that this corps can congratulate itself upon carrying off the prize of the meeting. During the day two of the Chrietchurch artillery, who were prevented from firing on the previous day through having to attend the big gun practice, were allowed to fire so as to enable them to take their average. The scores were —Sergeant Robert, 13. 8-21; Sergeant Fox. 17, 14—31. At a meeting held after the firing for Mr Blake's cup, it was decided that the Northern men should go down to shoot this day for the remainder of the prizes, the other volunteers firing on a day to be fixed. No score less than 56 points to win the cup ; any competitor not scoring an average of outers at the first two ranges to retire. The cup to be won twice by the same person before it becomes his private property. Ties to be decided under Wimbledon regulations. Gold or silver medals, of not less value than £5 and £3, will be given to the winner of cup and next highest scorer. Entrance fee, 2s 6d.
