CITY COUNCIL.

Tuesday, April 15. The Council met at the usual hour. Present—His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Calvert, Hobbs, Ick, Crooks, and Lane. FINANCIAL. The Town Clerk reported that their credit at the Bank amounted to £121 17s. Balance from last week, £126 Os 2d. Total, £247 17s 2d. No 1, drainage overdraft, £400 3s 9d ; drainage rate account, £301 2s 9d. The receipts for the week were aa follows :—From rate collector, general city rates, 1872, £37 7s 6d ; Waimakariri rate, 1872, £7 9s 6d ; quarter's rent from Post office, £67 15s; fines from Resident Magistrate's Court, £5 10s ; from inspector, on account of scavenging, £2 3s ; driver's license, £1 ; building license, ss; rent from Market Place, 7a. Total, £121 16s; wages, kc, £86 13s 6d. SURVEYOR'S REPORT. The City Surveyor reported as follows :— " The workmen have been employed during the past week carting stone and ballast from the Papanui road and other streets ; stone channeling Cashel street; stone kerbing: Mrs Tompkins' frontage ; clearing outside drains and repairing footpaths in variOUB parts of the city ; repairing streets (Weir's contract) ; clearing out drains, and wood kerbing in Armagh street, &c, &c," CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was read from certain residents of Madras street north calling the attention of the Council to the unfinished state of Madras street from the North town belt five chains southward, and requesting that that portion might be finished before the setting in of the winter. Referred to the City Surveyor to report upon. A letter was read from Mr P. Schneider, requesting that the portion of Lichfield street fronting his premises might be stone kerbed on the usual terms. A similar request was made by Mr John Turner, of Cranmer square, for wood kerbing in front of his sections on the usual terms. Mr Schneider's request was referred to the Works Committee, and Mr Turner's to the City Surveyor. A letter was read from Rev John Raven, enclosing a plan of certain allottmeuts of town lands, situated between Montreal and Antigua streets, which he is about to subdivide, and enquiring if the same are laid out in accordance with the general rules of the Council. The matter was referred to the City Surveyor. A letter was read from Mr W. Pratt, requesting the Council's permission to enclose the whole of the footpath on the north side of Cashel street to a dietance of forty-five feet from its junction with Colombo street, he undertaking to make the necessary arrangements for the safety and convenience of the public, The application was made for the purpose of carrying out certain alterations, the site being fully occupied. It was resolved to grant the request under the superintendence of the City Surveyor. PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE REPORT. The following report of the public works committee was read:— " Your committee beg to report that they recommend Mr Money be allowed to put down a 12in pipe drain at his own cost, estimated at £110, provided no nuisance is created thereby. ; _;

" That the sum of £15 towards the kerbing and making the footpath, contingent on tha Avon Road Board paying £10 towards the cost of same. " Your committee waited on the Government with reference to the subject of the footpath west side of Cathedral square, and a reply may soon be expected. Oα this matter the Government promised to communicate with the Council, tht terms were, the Council to pay as formerly the cost through the city, and in addition one-fourth the cost below the city. "The report of the works committee was approved. nrePECTOB'S BEPORT. The Inspector reported that he had again visited the Sandhills reserves in company with the sanitory committee and one of the contractors. With reference to Mr Cuddon's complaint. The cause had been ascertained to be a stoppage in the pipe under the footpath, which was used for car rying off the waste water from the horse trough at the back of the Royal Hotel; the pipe had since been oleared and the City Surveyor proposes removing the pipe if further complaints are made. The report was approved. LICENSE. A driver's license was granted to Eichard Mills. The Council adjourned at 7.40 p.m.
