Full accounts of the Chicago disaster report that 13,500 buildings wero destroyed, and 9-,000 persons bnrnfe out; Sixty bodies were at tbe Morgue for identification. Tho latest reports of the terrible fires in Wisconsin represent the loss of life as 100. Tho people rushed with their children to tho rivers, but many were overtaken aud roasted alive. Tlie greater portion of tho Arctic whaling fleet, of forty-three vessels, has been crushed in tho ice or abandoned. Tho crews, numbering 1200, were picked up by other vessels aud conveyed to Honolulu, where they had their wants supplied. A large quantity of oil was lost. The American Insurance Companios lost on the Chicago fires 80,000,000 dollars, and on tho Arctic fleet; 2,500,000 dollars. Disturbances havo occurred between the Europeans and Chinese at Losangelos, and fifteen Chinamen were hanged for firing at tho Europeans. Tbe yacht raco between tho Sappho and Livonia resulted in a victory for the Sappho. Grant has appointed a special thanksgiving for the good harvest. Further investigation into the New York accounts show defalcations to tho amount of 19,500,000 dollars.
