ANNIVERSARY FESTIVITIES.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. See,—l perceive that at a meeting lately held some of our early settlers suggested that our twenty-first anniversary should be celebrated by a dejeuner, or in colonial parlance " afeed." Now, sir, this is all very well in its way, but can our wives and daughters (who are also early settlers) participate in a gathering of, this kind ? Certainly not ; and as they have also with us endured suffering, privation, and toil in assisting to place Canterbury in the proud position she holds, why should they not be provided with enjoyment on the occasion ? and that they should be so provided, 1 beg to suggest to the committee that a picnic either by land or water would, I think, give the female portion of our families an opportunity of a day's pleasure which we could share with them, instead of eating and drinking by ourselves. If this were properly carried out by the gentlemen composing the committee I "have no doubt an enjoyable day would be the result. Yours, Sec, An Old Colonist. PROVINCIAL COUNCIL LIBRARY. TO THE EDITOR OP THE PRESS. Sib,—lt is, I believe, an acknowledged fact that at present in Christchurch there.is a great and pressing want of some library of general information, which might be open to all on payment of an annual subscription. It may not be generally known that within the Government Buildings there is the nucleus of a very good library. At present its use is limited to the august body of our senators and a privileged few. Surely it is but fair that those who have contributed towards its establishment should be enabled to receive some benefit from it ? The library of the Mechanics' Institute is no doubt a very good one, and if the two were combined a very good foundation would be laid for a really good library of books, periodicals and papers. I am, sir, your obedient servant, Ignoramus.
