CANTERBURY RIFLE ASSOCIATION.

Second Day—Tuesday Apeil 19. The firing on this day commenced with the International Match, lor whioh only two counties entered —tho English and Scotch —the representative of tbe Emerald Isle not being able, owing to the departure of some of their best shots, to get a team together. As will be seen by the scores, the English were victorious, scoring 204 points to their opponents' 185. The next match was the Cadets prize, and very well the little fellows acquitted themselves, the winning score being 16 pointe, •which at 100 yards is a very respectable number for Cadets to attain, the other prize-takera also were well on, making very fair scores. The All-Comers' Cup was won by Mr Thomson, who shot with a Henry rifle, and ho made some excellent shooting, although Private Wearing, of No. 5 Company, the second pnze-taker with a score of 47, shot extremely well, using the Government Enfield riile. The first two ranges ho seemed very much like winning, but at the GOO yards he fell off somewhat, and missing his first and fourth shots, his chance of winning the first prize was lost ; from the manner, however, in which ho shot, wo think that after a little practice Mr Wearing will bo able to take rank with some of our beat shots. In the Association Cup some dissatisfaction was expressed at Mr Thomson shooting with a Henry rifle, the regulations under which the prize was shot j for however, allowing any riile to be used ; Mr Thompson, rather than see the match fall through, gracefully waived bis right to vie any riile he chose, and lired with the regulation Eniield. The match resulted in three ties, which were decided according to Wimbledon rules.

Tho Judging Distance Prize, which was going on during the day, was carried out in | the following manner : the squad, in charge of an officer, was marched up and down over a range extending to 400 yards, halting them whenever he thought proper, a target made of calico waa apportioned to each man, bearing a number corresponding to the number on the card given to him by the secretary. The officer in charge at the conclusion of the firing then examined the targets, and the man whose number corresponds with the number of the target showing tho most points wins the prize. This was won by Lieutenant Pavitt with a score of 13 points. A few entered for the Horatio Ross Prize, but did not succeed in making anything like a score, owing to tbe darkness setting in.
