NEWS OF THE DAY.

Wβ would remind all persons interested, that the time for lodging applications for licenses, under the "Public-House Ordinance," will expira on Saturday, the 2nd April next. Thanksgiving services for the abundant harvest were held, yesterday, in several of the churches in Christchurch. We noticed that St. Luke's Church was tastefully decorated with wreaths, and sheaves of corn and flowers. The Carandini troupe gave one of their concerts on Friday night, and again on Saturday night at the Colonists' Hall, Lyttelton, The attendance was very good, the hall being nearly filled. Capital programmes were gone through, and as usual, many of the songs were encored. In the case Begina v JEarnshaw, the necessary fiat having been received from the Attorney-General, a writ of habeas corpus has been issued, and the defendant, who was convicted of conspiracy at the last criminal sittings of the Canterbury Circuit Court, will be brought up in Chambers this morning to justify bail, pending the decision of the Court

of Appeal on the points of law raised on demurrer at the trial. On Friday evening last a most successful tea party or social gathering took place at the schoolroom, Eyreton, in aid of the Kaiapoi Weeleyan Circuit Fund. The school was tastefully decorated. From eixty to seventy persons were present. After tea, a public meeting took place, and was addressed by the Keys. J. B. Eichardson and W. Beck, Messrs Meredith and Ayers. The Woodend choir was present, Mrs Price, of that place, presiding at the harmonium. A pleasant meeting was spent, and broke up about ten p.m, after passing votes of thanks to the

speakers and the ladies who provided tea ; i.e., Mrs T. Chilton, Mrs F. Denton, Mrs J. Martin, and Mrs Wm Cox. A sum of about £7 was the amount netted. The Art Exhibition, ac will be seen advertised, will remain open during this week, in the daytime only, from 11 till 6. So many country visitors have entered an appearance during the last few days, and it ie known so many will probably visit the Exhibition now another week's opportunity is offered them, that there can be no doubt the Government exercised a sound discretion ia permitting the use of the Museum for another week. The attendance on Saturday exceeded 300 persons, and a very successful musical entertainment took place in the evening, at which several ladies and gentlemen amateurs kindly assisted. The extension of the visiting hours to 6 instead of 5, ac hitherto, will enable many to attend in the daytime whose avocations clashed with the earlier hour before ineieted on.

There was a capital attendance at the Royal on Saturday evening. "AH that Glitters is not Gold, and the burlesque of " Lalla Rookh " were again produced, and we were glad to see a marked improvement in the former piece—-the parts being very well enacted and the various performers came in a for a full share of approbation from the audience. The singing and dancing of Miss Forde and Jenny Nye, in the burlesque, and the inimitable acting of Miss Casey Matthews, and Messrs Wolfe, Forde, and White, in their respective parts gained for them the repeated plaudits of the house. Nor must we omit the really excellent scenery of Mr Willis, closing scene of the piece being especially good. By particular request the burlesque will be again played this and to-morrow evenings, together with the comedy of " A Roland for an Oliver."
