Chbistchuech—March 17. [Before J. Birch, W. B. Tosswill, A. Duncan, Eeqrs , J P.'a.] Drunk and Disorderly.—Josiah Long was fined 20s. John Bohen and Thomas Waterworth were each fined 10s. Lunacy—Sarah Laughton was committed to the Lunatic Asylum, on the evidence of Drs Deamer and Frankish. Breach of City Bye-Laws—Richard Sunderland, for tethering a horse and allowing a horse to wander at large on the T->wn belt north, was fined 10s Thomas McFaddin, for driving a cow in Colombo street during prohibited hours, was fined ss. Assault—William Simmons, for assaulting Robert Falloon, was fined 10s and co«ts 14s Henry Smith was summoned for assaulting Kenneth Gordon McKenna. It appeared that a dispute arose through a quarrel amongst the children of the parties. The Bench fined tho defendant la, and recommended the complainant and defendant to keep their children apart if they could not agree. Thomas Mitchell was charged with assaulting , John Netherton at Rolleston. Defendant admitted the offence, but pleaded that he had received provocation. Convicted and fined 20s, and costs 16s 6d. Walter Hartnell and Thomas McKay were charged with violently assaulting Wm. Holmes in Antigua street, Christchurch, on Saturday night last. As the complainant could not identify defendant McKay, the charge against him was dismissed. Several witnesses swore positively to Hartnell as being the man who assaulted complainant. The Inspector of Police stated that defendant had bcon previously convicted of assaulting the police and other offences. The Bench considered that tho case was a very serious one, and sentenced defendant to two months' imprisonment with hard labour. Civil Cases —W H Barnes v Newnham and Co.; judgment for defendant, and costs 40a. D Corbay v Colonel Brett, judgment for amount paid into Court (£4 5s lOd), plaintiff to pay costs. G D Lockhart v E Curry, judgment for £5, and costs 14s. T Grant and Co v William Tosswill, judgment for £1 15s Id, costs 14s, to be divided. License Transferred —The license for the Rising Sun was transferred from James Innes to William Blunt. Lyttelton—Mareh 17. [Before T. D. Gibson, Esq., J.P.] Drunk and Disorderly—John Whitmore and G Nelson were charged with the above offence, and fined 5s each; in default, £4 hours' imprisonment. Kaiapoi—March 17. [Before G L. Mellish, Esq., R.M.] Vagrancy.—J Hughes, who, when arrested, yielded from his purse Is 6d, was charged with vagrancy under Clause 5 of that Act He was committed to 14 days' imprisonment.
