CHRISTCHURCH CITY COUNCIL.

Monday, April 26. The usual weekly meeting of the Council was held last evening at the City Council Chambers, at seven o'clock. Present —The Mayor, and all the Councillors. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Town Clerk reported the receipte for the week to be £42 7s 63, and the overdraft at the bank £37 6a 10d. The weekly pay sheet, amounting to £26 2s 9d. and several accounts, were passed and ordered to be paid. Cr Rtjddbnklatj said that Mr Harrw, the newly appointed Superintendent of the Fire Brigade, had taken possession during the day, and stated that the late Captain (Mr Gh H. Wileon) had afforded him every facility, and had delivered everything over in good order. The City Surveyor reported that the works during the week, with the exception of the contracts and clearing up the side drains, had given place to works connected with the reception of H.BJEL the Duke of Edinburgh. The labour gang had been employed on various works during the week. The reply of HRH the Duke of Edinburgh to the address presented by the City Council was read and ordered to be recorded on the minutes.

A letter was read from Mr W. Harris, thanking the Council for electing him to the office of Superintendent of the Fire Brigade. Cr Jameson congratulated the Council on the euccesful termination of last week's proceedings. Not a single accident had occurred, and

the display of loyalty wus most eatisfactorv A largo number of persona had partaken of th Mayor's hospitality, and lmd thoroughly on joyed therasetvo* at the dymner hie \Vo'r«hi had givon. But other ontertainnionte h a s been given, and it was rumoured that, a ali<,W had boon put upon the Mayor with referent thereto. Ho wished to ask the Mayor whether he was invited to the dinner at the" Club »i« to II R FT on Sat urclay ? 8 CU Tho Matoh.—l was not invited. Cr Jameson folt that a great slight had been put upon tho citizens by those gentlemen who wero willing enough to partake of the hospitality of tho worthy Mayor, but when they gave a banquet to H It H themeehes they did not invite the Chief Magistrate of tho city to join them—a gentleman of whoso hog. pitality they had just partaken. Ho would move in conclusion the following vote of thanks to the public bodies who had taken part in the procession—" That tho thanks of the Council bo given to all public bodies for their promptitudo in assisting the City Council to receive H R II in a royal manner." Cγ SHErPARD would second tho motion although ho regretted the remarks of Cr Jameson, as he (Cr Sheppard) thought it would have been better to have paused tho matter over with silence, and even now he hoped that the remarks would not go forth to the public. No doubt a marked Blight had been put upon tho Mayor—indeed the same thing had occurred before wbeu tho Governor was here—but then it was eaid that it was an oversight. He must say that it seemed strange that gentlemen should be content to place their feet under tho Mayor's mahogany and then to slight him. Cr Tombs entirely diaagreed with Cr Shep. pard. Such a matter ought not to bo passed over in eilence. The public had a right to know how the Mayor had been treated. Tho Mayor said that he had felt somewhat on the matter, but on reflection ho was satis* fied that if a person holding the position ho did ought to have been invited to the dinnor at the Club it was through an oversight that he was not invited. He was quite prepared to look upon the matter in that light, because many of the gentlemen were hie personal friends. The resolution was agreed to unanimously. Cγ Duncan moved— v That the reserve given by the Provincial Government to tho , City Council for a Cattle Market be let for grazing only until such time as the Council may wish to use it." The resolution was agreed to. Cγ Ruddenklau moved— ,. That the appointment of Mr W. Harris, as Chief Firo lnspeotor in the room of Mr Gh H. Wilsoa, resigned, be inserted in tho Gazette." The motion was agreed to. Cr Jameson moved —" That the thanks of the Council be given to the officers of tho Council for their services with reference to the reception of Hie Eoyal Highness." The motion was agreed to. On the motion of Cr Angus a vote of thanks was given to the Reception Oommitteo appointed by the City Council. The Council adjourned till Monday next, at 7 p.m.
