Monday, March 1. Present—The Mayer (Mr Wilcox), Councillors Allwright, Ward, Hawkins, Chalmers, and England. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Amount received during the week —Rates, £36 6s. The following correspondence was read :— To the Provincial Solicitor, concerning the lease for the reserves. To his Honor the Superintendent, acknowledging receipt of his letter, and stating that the Mayor will confer with him upon his return. To Mr Ulingworth, that the Council will hold him to the conditions of his agreement. To the custodian of the bathing shed, with regard to the hours for bathing. The report of the custodian of the bathing shed was read. It stated that the total number of bathers for the month was 301. Also that some damage had been done by the late gale. Cr Ward proposed, and Cr Hawkins seconded, '" That the repairs required be done by the Works Committee. The Mayob stated that at noon that day he had declared the following gentlemen elected as assessors—Messrs Ellisdon and Rouse. Auditors —Messrs Bunker and Cuff. The Clebk laid upon the table an abstract of the fees paid to their solicitor. The report of the Works Committee was read. It stated that there had been some delay in the finishing of the road to the night •oil shoot; owing to the wet weather, but that it would be completed by about Wednesday next.

Cr Ward asked for some information as to the coat of the road.

Cγ Chalmebs, in answer to a question about the state of the road, informed the Council that the water had caused it to settle, but without doing much damage. The following amounts were ordered to be paid:—Weekly pay-sheet, £5 16sj street igUting on account £11 8a; Gas Company for tar, £1 3e 4d; carting, £1 7s 10d. Cγ Wabd asked how muoh rent was due from Mr D. Davis ? The Clsbs stated one quarter, amounting to £2710e. The Mayoe said that the matter had not been lost sight of. Cγ Chalmebs asked what had been done with regard to Mr Julian's rent ? The Clbek read a letter that had been sent to their solicitor on the subject, and was directed to write to him again asking what had been done. The consideration of the bye-laws was gone ialo, and the following were passed :— Section I—Porticos and projections. Section 2—Names of street* and numbering of houses. Bection 3—Spouts and drains from houses, &c. Section 4—Crossings over footpaths and channels. Section s—Deposit of rubbish. Section 6—Depositing of building materials cod excavation*. Cγ Wabj> proposed, and Cr Hawkins seconded— " That the further consideration of &c subject be deferred for one week." Carried. The Mayor stated that the hole in the footpath in London etreet was dangerous. Cr Wabd moved, and Cr Hawkiks seconded—"That the Works Committee be requested to attend to the footpath, and to *ri»e to Mr Smart about it if they think it Carried.
