LYTTELTON ELECTION.
The voting for a member to serve in the Provincial Council, in place of Mr D. Davie, tnok Place yesterday at the Resident Magistrate's Court, Lyttelton. The contest was wn and was be very close ; but the result as declared by the Betuming Officer gt 410 p.m. was— Macpheraon ... 76 Merson 64 Mr Maopherson was therefore declared i/fcer the state of the poll had been declared the electors adjourned to the Colonists' Hall, tfben the Mayor having been voted to the cbair, called upon the successful candidate to address the electors. Mr Macpherson said he wished to return Wβ thanks for the honor that had been done him in being elected as their member, more especially ac he was a good deal in advance of | hie opponent. The contest had been keen end the canvassing also. The contest would do eood every way, by showing that Lyttelton was worth contesting for; and his having bad to fight for the seat would incite lam to work well and do his duty to the electors. He should go to his opponent (if the latter would allow him) whenever he wanted advice, as Mr Merson knew as much about Lyttelton end her wants as any one, and he should always be glad to hear from any of the electors in what way he could serve the town. [Ap- * Mr Meebon wished to thank the fifty-four gentlemen who had voted for him, and also the twenty-two who formed the majority for hie opponent. He entirely approved of the choice they had made for a new member. They had now a thorough mercantile man, and if he could give him any assistance he should be most happy to do so. He knew that it had required great exertions on the part of Mr Macpherson's supporters to place the latter co far ahead of himself on the poll. It might sound like egotism for him to say that he had represented 150,000 people in london, but he could assure them that it was the truth. Mr Macphehson proposed a vote of thanks to the Returning Officer, Dr Donald, which was carried by acclamation.
