Johnston, the toll-collector, was in arrears to the amount of £61 Is with the rent of the bridge, and the agreement between him and the Council had never been executed. The sureties also named by Mr Johnston had declined any responsibility. The toll-keeper explains that the reason his rent was not paid was owing to a miscalculation in the traffic he expected to have crossed the bridge. His sureties, Messrs Black and Harris, declined signing the agreement. He had taken in tolls an average of 15s a day, and 15s a day had been booked. In book debts he had £70 owing, and was prepared to pay on account £9 in cash if the Council would, for a month of his rent allow him to accept a bill at three months' with a good endorsement, and he would require a day to do it in. After some discussion Cr Birch moved, and Cr Oram seconded, " That the Council at once place a man in possession to take charge of the tolls of the bridge on their behalf. That Mr Johnstop be allowed three days, viz., till 6 p.ra on Monday next, to security for all arrears, as well as for future payment, such security to be approved by the Council. That in case such security be found and approved, Mr Johnston to pay all expenses to which the Council has been put, the net balance of such takings for such time as the person remain in possession be placed by them to his credit on account of next payment. That the cash now held by Mr Johnston be at once handed to the clerk, viz, £9. That on Mr Johnston failing to comply with the above to the satisfaction of the Mayor, Cr Dudley, and the mover, who are hereby appointed a committee for that purpose and for all other necessary measures herewith, he be sued at once for alimonies owing, and that fresh tenders be invited for the lease of the bridge." The resolution was unanimously carried and the Council adjourned.
