THE WEATHER.

The following summary is given of the results of the observations taken atChriatchurch, Hokitika, and tho Bealey during the month of October last:— CHBI3TOHUECH. During the first ten days of tho month the weather was dry and very warm for the season, with gules of wind from the north-west on the 2nd and 4th. From the 11th to tho 17th pleasant spring weather prevailed, coo! cloudy days, and frequent seasonable showers of rain. The remainder of the month was of the same general character as in the beginning, but not so hot, namely, brighs sunny days, and occasional strong north-westerly winds. A sharp frost oo3urred on the night of the 20th, and slight showers of hail fell on the 13th, 17th, and 26th. Sheet lightningwas seen very frequently at night over tho mountains in the interior. Spontaneous evaporation during the month, 566 inches. The mean temperature of the month, 5403 f was labove the average. Mean direetioa of the wind, E.N.E. Eainfall from January 1 to October 31 each year as follows :— 1867 ... 23674 inches on 75 days 1866 .., 15 671 inohes on 70 days 1865 ... 22-651 inches on 93 days 1864, ... 18-209 inches on 90 days Rainfall at Lyfctelton in October, OS9B inches on 12 days (Captain F. D. Gibson). HOKITIKA. An exceedingly wet month throughout; rain fell, moro or lees, days, equal to 2218 inohesjHEatest fall in one day, 318 inches on t&MMh. Thero wore two or three fine days iowrat the middle of the month, but the general character waa one of the wettest and stormiest on record here. There were thunder storms on the Ist. 2nd, and 26th, and gales of wind on the 6th, 18th, arid 26th from tho N.E. and S.W. respectively. Hail fell on the 2nd and 13th, and fog prevailed on the 23rd, 24th, arid 25th. The barometer was much depressed throughout the month, but not nearly to so great an extent as at Christchurch, v the mean atmospheric pressure at each station being 29629 inches and 29484 inches. Mean direction of the wind N.W. by W. Rainfall from January 1 to October 31 each year as follows :— 1867 ... 80-45 inches on 149 days. 1866 ... 99-14 inches on 172 days. BEALEY. At this station also the weathor was very wot and stormy throughout the month of "October. Thero wero only four days on which rain did not fall. Thunder storms occurred on tha 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 19th, and 26th, and gales of wind from N.W. on the 18th and 24&. • Snow fell on the 27th and 29th, on the latter ay the flats were covered three inches deep. The mean temperature, 45°'3, was 9* below Christchurch. The highest and lowest ,tein» perature in the shade was 60°8 and 30°0. Bolar and terrestrial radiations were not registered, owing to the instruments having been accidently broken. The prevailing direction of the wind was N.W. and S.W.
