LYTTELTON MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

The members of the Council met at the usual hour on Monday Inst. Present—Messrs Ward (chairman), Grubb, Balestiee, Hill, and Wilkin. The minutes of the former meeting were read and confirmed. The amounts received as reported by the Clark were :—Woledge (sale of buildings), £7 12s 2d ; Hawkins (purchase of sashes), 9e; Illingsworth, ditto, 12a ; total, £8 13s 2d. The following 'correspondence was read :— To Mr Stiffe, Chrietehurch,[offering to cancel his least on consideration of half-year's rent being paid. From Mr Stiffe in reply, accepting the Council's offer, and enclosing the necessary paper. .No reply had been received to a letter written to Mr J. S. Willcox respecting his resignation. To Mr Gordon, tovrn clerk, Christchuroh, requesting information respecting the amount allowed by the*' Town Council to the Fire Brigade. Keply from Mr Gordon, enclosing a report of "the" Christchiirch Fire Brigade, - which was read and considered.

From Mr C. W. H. Woledge, late superintendent of the ; LyUelton Fire Brigade, expressing an opinion that it would be useless to attempt the resuscitation of'the late Brigade, and,suggesting the advisability, of forming a hook and ladder company ; also enclosing a list of plant .required for the working. Mr Balestiee That Mr Woledge be communicated with, arid asked to be good enough to furnish the Council with his estimate of costs, and that ; a committee consisting of the members.present should meet at seven p.m. on Friday next to inquire into the necessary outlay, for, extinguishing fires, and that the: different insurance ' offices be comrauniI cated with, inquiring: as' to the amount they were willing to subscribe for such purpose." Mr. Hill seconded the motion, which was carried. From Mr E. A. Hargreaves, complaining of the bad state of'the road immediately in front of his store on Norwich qiiay." The Foreman" of Works was instructed to make a temporary footpath, so that the water might be conveyed away. • ■ ■"' ■ ■ ■ From Mr John Morgan, complaining of the overflow of a drain at the back of his premises, on the Sumner road. On the suggestion of Mr Balestiee, the Foreman of Works wae instructed to '"investigate the matter, and make any necessary alterations in the drain. Mr Hill further proposed— " That a committee, consisting of Messrs Grubb, Baleatiee, the Chairman, and mover, be formed, to inspect the drain in question, which extended to the back of Mrs Symond'e premises, and wae a great nuisance." ■ Mr Grubb seconded the motion, vrhioh was carried From J. T. IPeacoct, \Esq., offering a section In Hawkliuret road for eulti to the Council for £60. The Chairman explained that he had cloeed the; bargain with Mr Peacock, and asked the Council to indemnify bis action in tlae matter.
