LICENSING- MEETING.

The quarterly licensing meeting of Justices of the Peace was held jesterday at the Resident Magistrate's Court, Christchurch, to consider applications for publicans' licensee received at the Court. Present—Messrs C. C. Bowen, Tancred, Harman, and Wilkin, Mr Tancred (as senior justice) in the chair. The following applications for licensee were considered:— Christopher Dearing, hotel, Shearers' Arms, Antigua street.—An objection in writing was put in from a number o£the-inliabitants of the neighbourhood, stating there were already two hotels in the immediate vicinity, and that no more -were necessary. The Bench refused to grant a license. George Brooker and Edward Burns applied for licensee for hotels both situated in Oxford '.terrace. Mr Harper supported Brooker'e application; Mr Cottrell that of Burns. Mr 2ffottidge appeared on behalf of a number-of ■' residents in the neighbourhood to oppose Bum -

Lee Bfll, wine and beer, Colombo street —Mr Cowlishaw appeared in support of the application. The Bench thought this & similar case to the last. License refused. W. Naish, wine and beer, junctionStanmore road —The Bench refused to grant a license. Henry J. Brake, wine and beer, Springs track —The application had been refused last time, and the Bench saw no reason for granting it now. 'the license was therefore refused. J H. Bailey, conditional —The Bench considered as there was already a licensed house not far from applicant's that another was not necessary. License refused. The applications of Mr Nurse, of the C.CC dining-rooms, and W. T. Waterworth, foi for wine and beer licenses were presented, bu in consequence of there not being a full Bond the Resident Magistrate informed the appli cants that their applications would be for warded to the Superintendent. A quarterly licensing meeting was held a< Kaiapoi yesterday before W. B. Pauli, C Dudley, and J. E* Brown ,Eeqrs, J. Fs. John Leith applied for a country hote licensej at Leithfield, which was granted. Ar application from Williani Thompson, forawim and beer license at Leithfield, was refused. Sergeant Hurse reported as follows on the licensed houses in the Kuiapoi district — Piei hotel, Oram Brothers ; Mandeville hotel, Wm Hammett; Sneyd's Arms hotel; B.Jeffs VVoodend hotel, Arthur Ward ; White Crane Woodend, I. Ball are in good condition, wel furnished, and comply in every respect witl the conditions of their licenses. The Kaikainui hotel, James Aehworth, is short of ont sitting-room ; the house altogether, as an hotel ia uncomfortable and ill kept. The Kaiapo hotel, G. F. Day, requires new shingling, at the. rain penetrates into some of the rooms rendering them unfit for use The house ir the occupation of John Keasen, at Woodend for which a refreshment license waa granted, has the necessary accommodation. Sergeant O'Grady reports as follows of the houses in the Rungiora district holding licenses: Lion hotel, T. Wycherley—Conditions complied with. Plough Inn, S, Stephens —Conditions complied with, house clean and comfortable, itangiora hotel, T. C, Barnard —Conditions complied with. The license for this house was recently transferred from T. N. Baugh to the present licensee, and a great improvement has resulted from the change. Masonic Thomas Wild —Conditionß ; complied with.. This. baa recently changed hands, and tho bedrooms referred to in last report as deficient have been made good by the licensee. Sergeant Barlow, of Leithfield, thus reports of the houses holding licenses in that district. The following have complied with the terms of the Public-house Ordinance 1— Saltwater Creek hotel, D. and D. Cameron; Northport hotel, C. Turner ; Leith'e, hotel, C. E. Paget ; Brown's Bridge hotel, W. Hood ; Weka Pass hotel, Boss and Forbes; Hurunui hotel, J Hasti;*. With reference to the applications of W. Thompson and John Leith, the former pan comply'with the license applied for,; the latter has two bed-rooms and a bar parlour short, which are being built, but not finished; in oth»T respects the applicant can comply, with the required conditions. Sergeant Daviee, of Oxford, reports the following houses in good condition' and complying with the requirements of. their, license : —Half-way House, John Messenfi ; Harwood Arms, F. Luers ; Forest Inn, D., Fieht-r. John Lee, Oxford hotel, was brought before the Bench, at Rangiora, on pctober,l,7, 1867, for a breach of'clause''27 '' ofl the Ordinance, and fined £1, otherwise the house Has'been well conducted.
