[By West Coast Telegraph.] Hokitika, August 30, 4.25 p.m. 1 The election of a member for.'Hokitika for the Provincial Council pro- | mises to be very exciting. A close c«m. test is expected between Bonar and Prosser. The Omeo has arrived from Dunedin. A very heavy gale ia blowing from the south-west, and there is a tremoadous surf on. The bar is impassable, although- tho channel ia much improved aud is now deep and wide. A great deal of the beach has been washed away by .the surf. Beach street has disappeared, and Eevell street is threatened from end to end. Ten houses that were in danger of being washed away have been removed to-day. There is a great panic in consequence of the encroachments of the sea. The pool will soon be all right again, as a tender for closing the south channel has been accepted. [By Interprovincial Telegraph.] Wellington, August 30, 6.40 p.m. On the motion for going into Committee of Supply, last night, Messrs Vogel and Fitzherbert spoke for Bye hours. Mr Vogel's resolution condemned the proposal to raise a further loan under the Three Million Loan Act, MrFitzherbert's amendment affirmed the necessity of raising the money required under the same or some other Act. ; Mr Stevens moved the adjournment of the debate to this evening. The Ministry will regard the division as an expression of opinion on their financial policy. The old Opposition is broken up by tho defection of the Auckland members. There is no organized action amongst the many Southern member* who are opposed to portions of the Min*sterial policy.
