RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Lyttkltok—April 8. [Before Wm. Donald, Esq., KM.] Thos. Cunningham, Henry Swinley, Wm. Yielding, Geo. Clarke, Jamoa Collins, and Thos. Fitzpatrick, six seamen belonging to the ship Canute, were brought up in custody, charged with broaching cargo. Captain Quinn appeared in support of the above churgo. He stated that he had on three occasions noticed them in a state of drunkenness, and that they had conducted themselves in a very disorderly manner. At present he had found out that five cases of alo had been pierced. These men had no other moans of getting drink. They obtained access to cargo through the coal place; they had in the first instance broken the iron bar that secured the hatch leading to the fore-hold. On the second occasion they broke the lock on the fore-hatch, and in the third instance they had destroyed the iron bars in the ventilator, and got access to the hold by this means. Mr Nalder, solicitor for the prosecutor, applied to have the further hearing of the case postponed, in order to complete the evidence. In reply to the Resident Magistrate, the parties implicated said they did not object to the application. The further hearing is postponed to Wednesday next.
