ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
A Bpecial meeting of this society was held yesterday afternoon. Present : — Means. Wilken (chairman), Hill, Peacock, S_Te*u, Macfarlane, Hall and Hislop. The following letter was then read from the Rev. Henry Torlesse:— " Sib, —Many men having lately applied to mc for employment, some of whom I hare tested and found to be hard-working men who really were in distress, and glad of 5s per day, I should like to give my mite to the Acchmati* sation Society; in the success of whioh I am deeply interested ; but whilst so much distress exists I have not felt justified in subscribing to it. Would you accept the part-payment of wages if I should be disposed to place any applicants to mc for employment under Mr. Johnson's supervision? If the-friends-of tha Acclimatisation Society were allowed to do this—to send men to Mr. Johnson to obtainso many days' employment, themselves under* taking to pay half their wages— -t think, that much distress might be relieved, the Aoclhnv tisation Society's grounds vastly improved, and: ... the public generally interested. " I remain, Sir, 1 " Tours truly, " HenbY TOBSBBS-." The Secretary was requested tc inform the - Rev.
