CITY COUNCIL.
The Council held its weekly meeting on Monday evening, at the usual hour. Present 2 All the members. The Chairman in the chair. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed, and the following letters were produced and read :— f A letter from the Provincial Secretary stating that the sum of £500 would be at onco paid over to the credit of the Council, and a like amount on the Ist June. A letter from Mr. John Tulley, calling the attention of the Council to the dangerous state of a portion of Madras street north. The Town Clerk was directed to reply that the Council at present had no funds for the repairs of any of the streets; when they had, this complaint and others will be attended to.
The report of the Inspector was read ar d con' sidered.
Bills to the amount of £188 5s lOd were sub mitted and ordered to be paid.
The Town Clerk reported that he had received from the Provincial Government the sum of £500; from the Collector of Rates, £12 10s ; from the Inspector, £53 63 9d—total, £565 16s 9d.
The Inspector of Nuisances was ordered to serve notices, according to Clause 79 of the Ordinance, on all persons refusing to allow the new pans to be introduced, and in case of refusal after such notice to proceed under Clause 65, in all cases where necessary. The Chairman stated that he had advised Dr. Foster to request the Bench of Magistrates to adjourn the hearing of the objections against the Ratepayers' List to the 26th June. He did so believing the Council would support him in endeavoring to get an amended ordinance on this and other subjects passed through the Provincial Council during its session. After considerable discussion, it was moved by Mr. C. W. Bishop, seconded by Mr. Barnard—" That a committee, consisting of the Chairman, Messrs. E. B. Bishop, Lane, Farr, and the Mover, be appointed for the purpose of suggesting such necessary alterations and amendments immediately required in the City Council Ordinance, as will enable the Council to introduce a short ordinance into the Provincial Council at its approaching sitting on the 30th inst." Carried. After some routine business, the Council adjourned to Monday next, the 22nd inst., at the usutl hour.
