MELBOURNE.
By the if ero we have Melbourne papers to the 17th instant. The Argus of Saturday, the 15th, says:— Business throughout the week has continued devoid of animation. The absence of the mail advices and the observance of the Raster holidays hare in some degree influenced the markets ; but business has generally been inactive, and, with the exception of some few articles which have run low in stock, as draught beer of new brew, &c., the transactions of the week have been unimportant. Considerable quantities of goods of nearly all descriptions have been submitted to auction, but in nearly all cases with unsatisfactory results. The export trade, as can be gathered from the Customs' returns, shows a great falling off in the demand for the neighboring colonies, and until the adjustment of the tariff question no improved extent of trade is at all likely to ensue. The Mills. —Business transactions continue confined to actual trade requirements. Fine silk-dressed flour is still quoted at from £21 to £21 10s per 20001b t bran, at Is 7d; pollard, Is 10d to 2s per bushel; colonial made oatmeal, at £23 per ton.
