MUNICIPAL COUNCIL. (Christchurch, 23rd April, 1862) The usual weekly meeting of this body was held on the above-date* - "■*-- '•'-- -.-. .*••' '-••-■"'*'"'*'■ - ; *.-t: :•.;.;;] ..,„':• The Clerk reported that local contributions towards tho cost of the proposed works in Cashel-strect to the extent of £24 had been paid to him. The following papers were read and considered: — 1. A letter from tho manager of the Bank of New South Wales, offering to contribute towards the cost of a footpath in Hereford-street; upon this the town, surveyor was ordered to prepare an estimate of the cost of tho work, and the Clerk was instructed to inform Mr. Turner that this work would be carried out, on half the amount of this estimate being deposited by the Bank. 2. A letter from persons interested in the improvement of ylnuagh-street, guaranteeing contributions to the extent of one-third of the estimated cost of paving and metalling a considerable part of that street. This work was ordered to bo undertaken at once, the Surveyor to prepare specifications, and advertize for tenders, to be sent in before the 3rd May. A report from the Town Surveyor, on some works requiring immediate attention, and on other matters connected with his duties. The Surveyor was ordered to take steps for removing the surface from Hereford-streeet, "opposite Messrs. Johnstone and Williams office. It was decided that as a general rule all works of which the estimated cost was £25 or upwards, should as a general rule be executed by contract, but that works of a smaller extent should be done by hired labour. The Surveyor was authorised to obtain the necessary plant for giving effect to the latter part of this resolution. The Surveyor was authorised to carry out, without previousreference to the Council, trifling repairs in the streets requiring immediate attention, reiiortiug weekly what he might have done in this respect, and the expense he had incurred thereby. On the subject of nuisances within the town, with regard to which the Surveyor had made some suggestions, he was directed to act upon the instructions which had already been furnished to him, commencing with those, nuisances Avhich apfieaved to him most objectionable. The repairs proposed on the Papanui bridge were ordered to B tand over, until it should be ascertained definitely whether this work would be undertaken by the Provincial Government. An estimate was ordered to l>e prepared of the cost of the proposed repair of the Worcester St. Bridge, and submitted to the next meeting of the Council; and the Surveyor was ordered in future to submit an estimate of the cost of a]], works recommended by him. A\\ authority was given for procuring some office furniture <{.c, and the Council then adjourned to Monday next.
