NELSON.
The shooting for the prizes to be presented by the General Government to a certain number of the beet shots in New Zealand, which were to be competed for by the tiring of live shots at each range of 100, 200, and 300 yards, was commeueed in the usual practice ground of the Nelson City Company, by the VVakapuaka section, on the Ist of April. The prizes to be presented are:—First prize, £50 (with a champion pouch and belt, to be worn during the year in which it was won) ; second prize, £35 ; third, do., £30; fourth, £25 ;'fifth do., £20; sixth do., £17 10s ; seventh do., £17 10s.; eighth, £15 ninth, £15; tenth, £12 10s.; eleventh, £12 10s.; twelfth, £10; thirteenth, £10; fourteenth, £10; fifteenth, £10; sixteenth. £7 10s.; seventeenth £7 10s.; eigteenth, £5 ; nineteenth, £5; twentieth, £5. The following are the best scores that were obtained.
Wakapuaka.—April 1
By the above account, and from the fact that at Wakefield a score of 26 had boeu made with 11 ehota by Mr. Saniuo Hoult, when darkness compelled him to pospone the completion of his 15 rounds to another day, and from the score made by Mr. West, of the Nelson City Company, who obtained 2 bulls-eyes at the 300 yards range, and who, on subsequently firing one shot at a range of 400 yards, also made a bull's-eye, it will be seen that the Volunteers of this province have greatly improved since hist year.
