P. & T. Cricket Club Reviews The Year At Annual Meeting

At the fifth annual general meeting of the P. and T. Cricket Club there was a good attendance of members.

In his report Mr W. R. Whiteside, the retiring president, referred to the sound financial position of the club with a credit balance of £74, and assets standing at £2BO. Club expenditure during the year was £262, involving the erection of a small pavilion in the Domain, ground fees, a ned mat and cricket gear. This was due to the keenness and enthusiasm of members, who erected the pavilion debt free and assisted at all times in the raising of funds. Prominent on the financial committee were Messrs W. Rivett, club captain, and R. Schou, secretary, the latter being re-elected as secretary unopposed. On the playing side the club had again performed well, retaining the Coutts and Clarke Shields but losing the Collins Shield and Knockout Cup to Edgecumbe. The quest for the Williams Cup again failed. Mr Whiteside thought the standard was not as high as the previous season, but progress of the juniors not being as much as hoped for. More coaching was necessary. Nevertheless some outstanding perforfnances were put up by club members. He understood that the partnership of 203 by J. Rivett and R. Cleland for an opening partnership (both retiring undefeated) in the match against Te Puke was a Bay record. J. Rivett and F. Paton (now of Tauranga) also put up another score of 179 during the season. J. Rivett again proved the side’s best batsman and E. Malaquin it’s outstanding bowler (J. Rivett was a close second). The performance of John Fitzsimmons, a 15 year old junior, in carrying his bat through a complete innings (not out) against Taneatua was also noteworthy. Fitzsimmons’s 34 not out won him Mr Whiteside°s bat for the best score by a junior. Summing up, the retiring president stated that, with adequate assets, a sound bank balance and a growing membership the club was assured of a good season and a bright future. Later, Mr W. Rivett, the new president, referred to the work done by Mr Whiteside for the club and thanked him on behalf of all members.
