Interest In Golf Club Championship Round Results
Interesting results were recorded when the Whakatane Golf Club championship rounds began on Saturday. The defeat of A. E. Conway by R. T. Morpeth in the first senior round was a result expected to. bring bright sequels.. -In the intermediate, B. S. Barry, in whose favour the odds are keen, won his match against Hansen and Littlejohn, another favourite, beat L. B. Smith. J. A. Stewart’s loss to A. J. Moore was a surprise in the junior section.
A first-season player, D. O. Stewart, had a sound win from R. Jones, in a contest in which the odds had been considered to be almost even. The second round of the championships will be played on Saturday, with a Stableford handicap in conjunction and with championship consolation flights. In the final for the Founders’ Cup, Conway has beaten Alexander. Last Saturday’s results were:— Senior: Cutfield beat Hockin 2 up, D. Morpeth beat Wardlaw 3 and 2, R. Morpeth beat Conway 2 and 1, Bell beat Burke 2 and 1, Pattison beat Hyland at the 20th, Watson beat Henderson 3 and 1, Steel beat Spence 3 and 2, W. Luxton beat A. Morpeth 3 and 2. Intermediate: Barry beat Hansen, Littlejohn beat L. B. Smith, B. L. Butler beat Thomas, L. W. Luxton beat P. Bradshaw, Cantrell beat Miles, Cassidy beat Jamieson, Pearson beat Howat, Brebner beat Bushett.
Junior: D. O. Stewart teat Jones, Campbell beat Sloane, Cave beat Bridges, Wylie beat T. H. Wilson, Craddock beat Armstrong, J. Moore beat J. A. Stewart, Stone beat Fryer-Raisher, 1 Jarrett beat Shuker.
A bogey handicap was won by L. W. Luxton with a card of 1 up with B. L. Butler and A. Blake close up with 1 ‘down. The draw for Consolation flights is : Senior: Hockin v Wardlaw, Conway v Burke, Hyland v Henderson, Spence v A. Morpeth’.
Intermediate: L. B. Smith v Hansen, Thomas a bye, Miles v Jamieson, Howat v Bushett. Junior: Jones v Sloane,' Bridges v T. H. Wilson, Armstrong v FryerRaisher, J. A. Stewart v Shuker.
