Condition Of Refuse Tip Draws Comment By Health Inspector
The condition of the refuse tip was the subject of further comment from the health inspector, Mr A. R. Knights, when he reported to the Whakatane Borough ‘Council on Monday night. He reported:— Food Premises. While nq written requisitions have been made, I have advised a number of occupiers to carry out repainting and other renovations before any spraying with D.D.T. is done. These renovations are mainly required in kitchens of eating houses and in home cookeries etc. In many cases spraying with D.D.T. is done during October or November, and all walls, and ceilings should be cleaned and washed beforehand.
Samples Taken. Milk analytical 4, bacterilological 3. Milk shakes 3, Bacon 1, Borough water 1. All were satisfactory, except the sample of bacon, and this matter is under action. Borough water showed B. Coli to be absent in 100 millilitres.
Plumbing and Drainage. Work inspected has been satisfactory, but some plumbers are lax,in applying for permits to carry out the work before commencing. River Area—rear of shops The Strand. Inspections have been made with a view to having all nuisances abated. The matter of improvements to the drainage system is now under consideration. During the month seven notices were sent to occupiers of food premises regarding waste matter thrown out on the riverbank. Later inspections revealed that the practice had ceased—for the time being at any rate. Should any of the occupiers continue to offend in this respect, an immediate prosecution will be recommended.
Refuse Tip. Still continues to be an eyesore from Commerce Street, and unless it is properly cleaned up within the next month or two, will prove to be a wonderful breeding ground for flies during hot weather.
