Sir, —I think it is interesting to read in your paper of September 4 “Opinion is sought from Gisborne.” The lower paragraph is interesting. It reads, “In an informal discussion it was mentioned that Tauranga authorities had gone as far as Opotiki in search of support. Let me refer back to the Herald April 19. “We had no comment to make” said the chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board to a request from the_ Whakatane Chamber of Commerce indirectly suggesting support for Whakatane claims as the future East Coast timber export port. The Herald report concluded, the-Board was asked for ah expression of opinion but members made it clear that they were not interested. I should think that appealing to Auckland is somewhat different to a letter to a town in the area that will benefit by a harbour at Tauranga. I cannot see how Gisborne will benefit by a harbour at Whakatane which is so dependant on a secondary industry. A harbour at Tauranga serving such an area of' Waikato, absorbing the area of Whakatane, sending primary products to England could easily assist shipping from Gisborne. Yours etc., C. R. J. RELF.
