Dominion Rallies To United Nations Appeal For Children

Donations for the United Nations Appeal for Children are now beginning to roll in from all parts of the district. In the last few days over £IOO has been raised and this is expected to be exceeded very considerably by the beginning of next week. On Friday th e ' main street appeal will be held at Whakatane.

So far donations have only been coming in slowly. They are being received either at the county office or the borough chambers. Those people who live outside the borough may deposit their donations at the county office.

On Friday, the main shopping day, Whakatane will be asked to subscribe in a street appeal. In addition a canvas is to be made of all business firms. Circulars have been sent out and it is suggested that firms collect from their staffs and have one sum ready when the collectors call.

Beside the street appeal donations may still be given by those people who wish to give a separate amount. These will be acknowledged in the Beacon as the various deposits are received.

Besides Whakatane other centres in the Bay of Plenty have started with their individual appeals. It is expected that the total amount finally collected in the district should compare favourably with those of other centres.
