Rowing

WHAKATANE SECOND AT HAMILTON Whakatane crews gained two second placings at the Hamilton regatta held on the Waikato River on Monday. Under ideal conditions there were some close placings in a number of events and in the Youths’ Fours Whakatane had a Very close second, finishing strongly behind West End. From the start of this race the Whakatane crew, M. Whittaker (str), M. Brown (3), K. Bowering (2), K. O’Rourke (bow) T. Flay (cox) went out with the leaders and after covering half the course were lying second to West End. About two lengths further back Tauranga began to challenge but in the last sprint West End managed to hold their lead from Whakatane.

A convincing second place went to the Whakatane heavy maiden crew, P. Armstrong (str), S. Shapley (3), W. Sandham (2), G. K. Koea (bow) T. Lynds (cox), in a race of nine starters. The winner, Hamilton, went away to an early lead and held this to the finish but Whakatane, rowing easily, kept in behind to be second and at no stage looked like losing this place. West End, the third boat, was 1£ lengths behind.

Other Whakatane crews who competed were the juniors, G. Moore (str), E. Hunt (3), L. O. Stewart (2) G. Dines (bow) and the light maidens, P. Bowering (str), K. Cain (3) R. Seebeck (2), T. Stewart (bow).
