Bullet-Proof Plastic Cloth
A new plastic cloth that stops shell fragments like armour plate is described by three, American scientists in a report to the American Chemical Society. Experimental car bodies, plane fuselages ' and boats have been made with it. Scientists say it can be moulded into noiseless gears, waterpipes, furniture and other articles.
They claim it is easy to make the material from common textiles and plastic. The cloth is draped over a mould, and the liquid plastic is poured over the cloth and spread out like jelly on toast. Alternate layers of plastic and cloth are applied, and finally the moulded material is subjected to moderate pressure. It is immersed in hot water for a few minutes to harden it.
A multi-layered sandwich of this combination is claimed to be twice as strong as structural steel.
