EASTERN BAY Y.F.C.’s SCORE IN STOCK JUDGING

The home team representing the Young Farmers’ Clubs of Eastern Bay of Plenty defeated Western Bay at the annual inter-district Y.F.C. stock judging competition held on the farm of Mr Gordon Mexted, Thornton, on Monday. Eastern Bay’s team, consisting of L. Broadmore (Thornton), D. Adams (Awakeri), and F. G. Hill (Taneatua) scored 412 points against Western Bay’s 373 points run up by B. Grant (Te Puke), C. Davies (Paengaroa), and R. Blaymires (Paengaroa). The competition for the Wright, Stephenson Challenge Cup was for correctly placing, with reasons, four mature and tested dairy cows according to dairy type. The adjudicator, Mr K. A. Bennett, Papamoa, used production records of these cows after the competition to compare with their classification according to type. He said that type gives evidence of a desirable conformation, and if the cow conforms to dairy type she has no visible weakness. The only true criterion, however, he said, is her production of butterfat. In an open competition run at the same time the order of success was F. G. Hill (Taneatua) first, followed by R. Blaymires (Paengaroa) second, and then Albert Green (Taneatua), Colin Martin and D. Adams (Awakeri), L. Broadmore (Thornton), Bruce Vant, Alan Lloyd and C. Dawes (Western Bay), J. M. Barr, John Hawken and G. Murray (Eastern Bay) and B. Grant (Te Puke). There were also other competitors who did not score so well. Eastern Bay also defeated Western Bay in a porker and baconerjudging competition with a total of 345 points against 270. The open class in this competition was won by R. Blaymires, with Colin Martin second, L. Broadmore third, and Albert Green fourth.
