THE SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE

The spirit of adventure, Incentively moved Pat, He was one of nature’s gamblers, And would often don his hat, Seeking new vocations, In a word, fresh situations; A rolling stone gathers no moss, But a stable is bad for any hoss, Was Pat’s confirmed objection; When the wanderlust infection, Prompted him to try his skill, As benchman in a bush sawmill, Pat’s forefinger soon was severed; As he viewed the injured paw,' “Carelessness,” said the manager, “Pardon,” said Pat, “The saw, Had hardly started spinning, When I simply went like that, Bedad! another finger gone! I’m fired, so* long,” says Pat; Pat’s next adventure happened, in a cabinet maker’s shop, Where the question of employment, He did confidently pop; The manager was quizzical,. Asked Pat if he would mind, Explaining how„ he’d set to workj To make a Venetian blind; “Sure sir,” said Pat, “that’s simple, When you know what you’re about, Lead me to the Italian blighter, And I’ll gouge his peepers out! Pat once more upon the road, Came to a builder’s yard, Where he posed as a joiner, Used to working well and hard, “Can you make a pair of sashes?” Said the supervising gent, “Sure,” said Pat, “or anything to which my mind is bent;” The first attempt of Patrick’s Was a very sorry sight, He ..hid it underneath the bench, And then resumed the fight, With another pair of gashes, Which were anything but right, The shop foreman came along, And went for poor Pat good and strong, “It’s enough to raise a . parson’s spleen, I never in my life have seen, ' Such sashes anywhere!” “Your pardon Sir,” said smiling Pat, As he put on his coat and hat, “Sure parting is a cruel wrench, There’s a far worse pair under the bench!” H.
