CAROLS AND JOLLIFICATION
DISTRIBUTION OF GIFTS The colourful and indeed very beautiful ceremony of carolling through the wards on Xmas Eve was carried out at the Whakatane Hospital, by the nursing staff assisted by the St. John Ambulance officers and members of, the V.A.s. As in the past each nurse carried a lighted candle and as they entered the decorated wards the whole effect was pleasing and uplifting. On Christmas Day the now-tradi-tional distribution of gifts to all the patients was carried out by a jolly if businesslike Santa Claus. Again the Christmas tree was laden and no one had been forgotten. The nursing staff had gone to considerable pains to muster all available patients in the central ward so that all. should enjoy the fun. As one patient remarked after to a Beacon representative, ‘many of those in hospital saw more of the genuine Christmas festivities, than they would have in their own homes.’
