CALEDONIAN SPORTS

GALA AT OHOPE NEW YEAR’S DAY EVENT All arrangements are now completed for the annual New Year’s Day Caledonian Sports at Ohope Beach next Wednesday. The Whakatane Caledonian Society which has steadily built up the gathering over the past three years .is determined to make the 1947 sports the brightest and the most varied of them all. Inquiries and entries have been received from all parts of the North Island. The Highland Section for v r hich the usual handsome trophies have been offered (now on display in John Patterson and Son’s window) will bring the finest dancers and pipers in the Province to the boards: Three bands at least will be represented, and will compete in both drumming and piping contests. It will be remembered that the Hamilton band last year made a deep impression on the local public, for its' smartness and precision: This year we understand that the Tauranga band will be its closest contestent, for under the steady leadership of Pipe Major Johnston -the Tauranga kilties have made remarkable progress over the year. The Society has wisely included an attractive ‘chopping’ section in its programme and the recently formed Bay of Plenty .Association has undertaken to foster this sport in such a manner that the finest competition available will be onshow. Chopping has ever been a popular sport in this district and next Wednesday’s events must attract a popular following. The athletic fields will be repeated, while the marching contests should this year be widely entered for in view of the recent filup give the pastime by reason of the Basketball teams success at Rotorua. Already there have been promises of entries from Rotorua, Ngongotaha, Morrinsville and Tauranga.
