ASSAULT AND WILFUL DAMAGE
OFFENDER IN COURT
On a triple charge of assault, wilful damage and of obtaining credit by fraud, Charles R. J. Cameron, of Whakatane, was hailed before Messrs T. J. Cummings and J. G. MuLholland in the local court yesterday. Accused admitted the two minor offences but denied the assault. In evidence, Peter Coutts, grillroom proprietor, said that on the | evening of Wednesday last, accused had entered the shop and ordered a meal. When lie had finished he declared he had no money and asked for a cheque form. Later lie refused to make a cheque came violent, striking witness in the face and smashing the front of the counter. Cameron declared that he. remembered little of the episode, having been drinking heavily. He had only a fuddled recollection of what took place. He had no intention of evading payment. Sergeant Farrell said that it was obvious accused was drunk at the time and in an angry mood. The dispute over the meal, had lead to violence. He was otherwise of a good character. Accused was convicted and ordered to pay the cost of the. meal (2/3) on the first charge, convicted and ordered to pay the cost of damag<j repairs (£4 12s 6d) on the second and convicted and discharged on the third.
