VAGRANT CONVICTED

ASLEEP IN PORCH CAUTIONED BY JUSTICES Found asleep in the porch of a Uiouse jn Toroa Street on the night -of'.June 21, Edward Herbert McCausland, a returned so'.dier, pleaded guilty in the Whakatane Court last Wednesday to being found without lawful excuse on the property of an invalided ex-serviceman. Sergeant Farrell said that following a complaint, the police had proceeded to the house concerned and found accused asleep on the porch with some blankets over him. The police were not. pressing for a pern -alty, and suggested that accused be convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within six months if •called upon. McCausland was a man who had served four years with the .Maori Battalion where, his conduct was.good. In all other respects he bore a good character. The Bench observed that in view of the police recommendation they would convict the prisoner and discharge him —subject to his coming sup for sentence if called on. The practice had to be put down.
