SIGN ON CLIFFS

PERMISSION TO PUBLICAN

HARBOUR BOARD DECISION

"A few years ago there was much opposition to this sort of thing and I know there will be opposition to this. I myself put up a petrol sign and people talked of chopping it down. 1 feel that, in the town itself, the business people should have the right to put up signs,. There Should not be signs where bush bat inside the town signs should be allowed, whether sixi feet or sixty feet long," said Mr G. A. Brabant when the Whakatane Harbour Board 'considered an application from Mr H. E. Cucksey to erect a large neon-lit sign on the hillside near the entrance to The Strand. Permission, was grant, ed to Mr Cucksey to do this. ''Some people will object to it," warned Mr 1 Brabant. "We must look at it from all sides and it is well to bring the matter out now. I myself hope that people will erect these , signs. ''Some people would say the hills are pretty but the signs are a convenience to the travelling public." The chairman, Mr J. W. Sumner, said that Mr Cucksey had got ir touch with him and had pointed out the spot where he wanted to place the sign close to Bisley's notice. Mr Cucksey found that strangers coming into the town did not know where his hotel was and he wanted to direct them to it. The chairman added that he had told Mr Cucksey that the fixing of a charge for the sign was a matter for the board, but in his opinion it should not be less than £5 a year. Mr Cucksey wanted & five year term guaranteed .■ Members said that this might mean that the sign would be obscured by buildings on the section at the foot of the cliff. Eventually, on Mr Ruddick's motion, seconded by Mr Mitchell, it was decided to grant the application for the erection of the neon sign for a five year term, at a rental of £5 a year. ;
