MR. J. W. SUMNER
O, HARBOUR BOARD CHAIRMAN RE-ELECTED FOR COMING TERMS Mr J. W. retiring chairman of the Whakatane Harboutr Board, was re-elected to the position for the ensuing year at the board's annual meeting in the Whakatana County Chambers on Friday. Menx* bers paid tributes to Mr Sumner*sj ■ ability and industry in the position. The ratepayers were fortunate in ha\r ing such a man at their service. Mr Sumner's re-election was proposed by Mr R. Ruddick and seconded by Mr G. A- Brabant. Returning thanks for the appointment Mr Sumner said he would endeavour to carry out the duties ■ ill an efficient manner. He had always tried to do so in the past. Mr Sumner has now been a mem-/ ber of the Whakatane Harbour Board \ since 1921, and has served as chairman for several terms. The chairman's honorarium was fixed at £60, with travelling expenses The dates of meetings were fixed for the first Friday of alternate months as at present. , • When this was under discussion Mr Brabant suggested that the time of commencement should be changed.He suggested that 12.45 p.m. would be a suitable hour. This would avoidE making two ''bites'* at the meeting* Other members said that this might make the ending of the meetings so late as to inconvenience country members, and it was ulti_ > mately decided that the meetings should open at 10.30 a.m. insteafl of 11 a.m. as at present.
