PAPER FREIGHTS
o CARRIAGE BY WATER HARBOUR BOARD HOPES A reduction of harbour dues to Is a ton-was agreed upon by the Whakatane Harbour Board at its meeting on .Friday, for goods put through the Whakatane l ; aper Mills wharf the charge to be on weight. The subject was raised by a letter from the Northern Steamship Co., who had been negotiating with the paper mills for a freight contract. The shipping company said that it , was necessary to quote a very fine price as the mills had a contract, with the Railways Department. There wah a railway line right into the mills, and much of the paper consigned from Whakatane was sent to firms in Penrose and Newmarket, Auckland. These firms were also on the railway. The company thought that a ra te of Is a ton charged on weight, would enable them to secure thi 3 business. Mr J. W. Sumner, chairman said that if the board helped the shipping company in the matter the freights would make up for recent losses through road cartage. They mu« help the mills which in the future might have an output three or four times ;is great. It would be a great thing if the inward cargoes as well as Lhe outward were handled by water.
